Every Game Is Secretly Running A Priorities Class
Nobody hands you a syllabus when you sit down for a board game night, but every game is teaching you something whether it announces it or not. Points teach you what matters. Turn order teaches you what matters. The specific way a scoring track rewards one behavior over another is quietly training your brain to value certain moves and dismiss others, and most players never consciously notice the lesson happening in real time. You just walk away from a few sessions of a game already knowing, almost instinctively, what a good turn looks like in that particular system.
This is not some accident of good design. It is the entire point of good design. A game’s rules are a values statement dressed up as a rulebook, and the players who get good at a game are usually the ones who absorbed that values statement fastest, often without ever putting it into words.
Points Are A Blunt Teacher But An Effective One
Scoring systems are the most obvious version of this lesson, and also the least subtle. If a euro game gives you five points for a completed building and one point for a leftover resource cube, you learn within a round or two that buildings matter more than hoarding cubes. That is not deep psychology. That is just arithmetic doing the teaching for the designer, and it works fast because the feedback loop is immediate and unambiguous.
Magic does something similar with card evaluation, except the feedback loop is messier and takes longer to click. New players tend to overvalue big flashy effects and undervalue quiet efficiency, and it usually takes a rough handful of losses before the lesson lands. Anyone who has watched a newer player slowly figure out that card evaluation is a skill the game teaches gradually rather than all at once has watched this exact process happen in slow motion, one bad trade at a time.
Some Lessons Hide Where You Are Not Looking
The interesting version of this teaching happens when a game trains you to care about something without ever putting a number on it directly. Commander is full of this. Nobody writes down a threat score during a game, and yet every experienced player at the table is running an invisible calculation the entire time, constantly updating who looks dangerous and who looks safe based on board state, open mana, and a dozen other signals nobody explicitly ranked.
That invisible calculation is not innate. It gets taught, slowly, through painful experience watching the wrong player get left unchecked while everyone politely ignores the actual threat sitting three seats over. The game trains that instinct the same way any repeated system trains a habit, through the psychology behind how players learn to assess threats at the table, and once that instinct sets in, it becomes almost impossible to turn off even outside of a game.
The Scoreboard You Cannot See Is Often The Real One
This gets even stranger once you notice that a lot of games run two scoreboards at once. There is the official one, the life total or the victory point track, and then there is the social one, the informal ranking of who the table trusts, who the table fears, and who the table has quietly decided is safe to ignore for another turn or two. That second scoreboard is not written anywhere, but it shapes decisions just as much as the visible one, sometimes more.
Players who are good at reading a table have usually internalized how the invisible scoreboard in Commander shapes decisions long before life totals actually change, and that skill did not come from a rulebook. It came from repeated exposure to the same social pattern until the brain started flagging it automatically. The game taught it the same way it taught card evaluation, just through a channel with no numbers attached.
Bad Games Teach The Wrong Lessons Just As Effectively
Here is the part that should worry designers more than it apparently does. A poorly tuned system teaches bad values just as efficiently as a well tuned one teaches good values. If a game rewards turtling and punishes aggression too harshly, players learn to sit back and do nothing, and they learn it fast because the system is reinforcing that lesson every single round. The players are not wrong for playing that way. The game trained them to, and blaming the players for optimizing around a broken incentive is a little like blaming a dog for learning the trick you accidentally taught it.
This shows up constantly in card evaluation too. A card like Smothering Tithe teaches an entire table to value tax effects and slow economic advantage over flashy board presence, and once one person at the table starts winning with that approach, everyone else quietly recalibrates what they think a good card actually looks like. That recalibration is not conscious strategy talk happening out loud. It is the game, and the results at the table, doing the teaching without anyone signing up for the lesson.
Why This Matters More Than It Sounds Like It Should
Once you notice that games are constantly teaching values instead of just testing skill, a lot of frustrating table experiences start making more sense. That player who always seems to make the “wrong” move by your standards might just be running a different values curriculum than you, taught by a different set of games or a different local meta that rewarded different things for years. There is no universal correct read on a board state. There is only the read your particular gaming history trained into you, and someone else’s history trained them differently.
This is also why switching games, or switching formats, can feel so disorienting even for experienced players. The instincts that took years to build in one system suddenly stop applying, and the brain has to relearn what to care about from scratch. A veteran Commander player dropping into a tight two-player eurogame is not suddenly bad at games. They are just enrolled in a new class with a completely different syllabus, and it takes a few rounds before the new priorities start to feel natural instead of arbitrary.
The next time a game night group disagrees about what the “smart” play actually was, it might be worth remembering that nobody at the table is wrong exactly. They are just running on different training data, built one session at a time, by whatever games happened to teach them what to care about first.
You Can Feel The Curriculum Shift Mid-Game
There is a specific moment worth watching for, the point where a new player’s priorities visibly click into place partway through a session. Early on they are making decisions that look scattered, chasing whatever seems shiny in the moment. Then something happens, usually a loss they can trace directly back to one specific misread, and their next several turns look completely different. That shift is the curriculum landing in real time, and it happens far faster than most people expect once the right lesson finally clicks.
Experienced players sometimes forget how disorienting that phase feels because their own values got locked in years ago and now run on autopilot. Watching a newer player go through it is a decent reminder that the instincts veterans treat as obvious were never obvious at all. They were built the same slow way, one uncomfortable lesson at a time, by a game that never bothered to explain itself out loud.
Classrooms Are Starting To Notice The Same Effect
Some classical education programs have picked up on this teaching effect on purpose instead of leaving it to chance.
